Cumbria

From the Irish Sea, the coast is often overcast with showers or steady rain, though brief clearer slots can appear between passing systems. Moving into Ennerdale and Borrowdale, precipitation more often mixes with sleet and snow, and low cloud clings to the fells while heavier bursts sweep through on gusty winds. Over the higher crossings toward Patterdale, wintry conditions are common, with lying snow at times and intermittent thaw bringing drizzle at valley level. Crossing the limestone edge to Shap and on to Kirkby Stephen, the pattern stays very changeable—dull dry interludes punctuated by snow showers or cold rain—with temperatures generally around freezing to mid single digits Celsius.

North Yorkshire

Through Swaledale from Keld to Reeth, expect a wintry mix: overcast skies, frequent drizzle or light rain in the valley, and periodic snow on surrounding tops. Across the lowlands toward Richmond and Danby Wiske in the Vale of Mowbray, conditions turn a little drier but remain grey, with patchy drizzle and occasional light rain. Climbing onto the North York Moors from Ingleby Cross via Clay Bank and White Cross, colder air returns; sleet and snow showers sweep the open moor with strong westerlies between quieter lulls. Dropping toward Grosmont and the coast, the weather stays unsettled—showery bursts and longer overcast spells—and the final clifftop stretch to the North Sea is often breezy and damp, with temperatures broadly near freezing inland to mid single digits by the sea.
