May on the Camino de Santiago Francés feels like spring in motion. Skies swing between cloud and bright spells, with frequent light showers and the odd heavier burst, especially near the mountains and in Galicia. The central plateau often brings long, dry stretches, though breezes can be brisk on exposed ground. Most days sit in a comfortable band, with cool mornings and mild to warm afternoons, and conditions can flip from grey to sunny and back within hours.
Packing list for Camino routesThe route starts in the Pyrenees with changeable weather: low cloud, drizzle, and passing showers punctuated by brief sunny windows. Over the highest ground a late flurry is still possible, and winds can be gusty on the ridges. As you descend into the valleys and rolling farmland, showers become more intermittent, with longer dry spells amid overcast periods. Temperatures are generally cool in the morning and mild to warm by afternoon.
Crossing into La Rioja, days turn brighter and more settled, with many dry hours and good sunshine. Short-lived showers or a sudden heavier burst still appear at times, but they usually pass quickly. Afternoons are typically mild to warm after a fresh start.
Beyond Burgos the plateau brings wide horizons and steadier patterns, with plenty of dry, sunny days and some cloudy stretches. Showers still sweep through on occasion, and a few can be briefly heavy as systems cross the plain. Near León and over the Montes de León, cloud builds more readily over the heights and bouts of light rain or drizzle return, with winds freshening on the passes before easing into the Bierzo valley. Temperatures are mostly cool in the mornings and mild to warm in the afternoons.
Climbing into Galicia at the eastern hills, the air turns damper and the weather takes on an Atlantic feel: frequent mist, drizzle, and light rain, interspersed with short sunny breaks. Showers can occasionally become heavy, especially as fronts move through, then ease to quieter intervals. Winds are often noticeable over exposed ridgelines and lighter in the valleys. Temperatures are generally mild, with a cooler feel over the heights.
