Weather forecast for the GR 10 in December

December on the GR 10 feels firmly wintry. Skies are often overcast, and the western side sees frequent showers with longer wet spells, while higher ground turns that moisture into snow. As the route climbs into the central Pyrenees, snowfall becomes the default, with short, crisp clear windows between passing systems. Temperatures feel cool to cold overall and bitter at altitude. Farther east the weather steadies a little, with more dry days and brighter spells, but cold nights persist. Near the Mediterranean the air is cooler rather than harsh; cloud alternates with sunshine, and only occasional light rain reaches the coast.

Nouvelle-Aquitaine

From the Atlantic start, December brings mostly overcast skies with frequent showers. Short brighter breaks appear between passing fronts, but damp, cloudy days dominate. As the route climbs into the Basque hills, light rain and drizzle are common, with the higher ridges occasionally turning that to sleet or wet snow.

Further inland, through the limestone gorges and toward the first big cols, conditions turn wintry. Snowfall becomes frequent and can be heavy, with valley rain during brief thaws and low cloud clinging to slopes. By the time the trail reaches the high ski basin, it is full mountain winter with regular snowstorms and hard freezes, while lower villages see a mix of cold rain and snow.

Occitanie

Across the central massifs, around the high cirques and spa valleys, December is dominated by snow. Systems roll through often, laying fresh snow on the tops and bringing mixed rain–snow lower down during milder pulses. Clear spells do occur, giving crisp, bright interludes before the next front.

On the higher plateaus and around the big lakes, it is very cold and firmly snowy. Cloud frequently caps the ridges, and during active periods visibility drops with steady to heavy snowfall. Between storms, the air is still and sharp under pale sun.

Eastward into Ariège, the high refuges sit in deep winter, with repeated snowfalls and hard nighttime freezes. Valleys alternate between cold rain and wet snow when temperatures lift, then refreeze under clearer skies. The pattern is unsettled overall, but with occasional bright, calm days.

Beyond the high interior, the eastern Pyrenees gradually dry out. The Cerdagne and Canigou slopes see periodic light snow and longer dry stretches, while lower elevations tend to cloud and drizzle more than heavy rain. Near the Mediterranean, days feel cool rather than harsh, with more sunshine and only isolated showers on the coast.
