In September, the Ruta de la Lana traverses a diverse climate across various regions, starting from the warmth of Valencia's coastal zones to the cooler, sometimes rainy, areas of Castile and León. In Valencia, the days begin with high temperatures and occasional rain punctuates stretches of sunshine, offering significant warmth. As the trail progresses into Castile and León, the weather fluctuates more dramatically, with cooler temperatures and periods of rain becoming more frequent, particularly in the latter stages.
Starting in Alicante, the weather is predominantly sunny with occasional patchy rain and temperatures reaching highs of 30°C, dropping to 21°C at night. As you move through Orito, the sunny spells are interspersed with heavier showers at times, with a significant downpour of 12 mm reported on one day. In Petrer and Villena, the sunny conditions continue with sporadic rain showers, and temperatures here mostly fluctuate between 25°C and 35°C.
Further along in Caudete and Almansa, the weather remains warm and sunny, though interrupted by moderate rain showers. Highs still reach an impressive 39°C in Caudete. Approaching Alpera, partly cloudy skies dominate, with occasional heavy showers, while Alatoz experiences a mixture of sun and significant rain showers.
The trek through Casas Ibáñez and Villarta reveals mostly sunny conditions, though a day of 17 mm rain in Casas Ibáñez and a similar heavy shower in Villarta hint at increasing rainfall as the route progresses. Campillo de Altobuey and Monteagudo de las Salinas bring more sunny days with some afternoon downpours, giving way to mostly fair weather in Fuentes.
Arriving in Cuenca, the region offers a blend of sun with sporadic rain showers, but more downpours occur as you reach Bascuñana de San Pedro, where significant rain is recorded. Villaconejos de Trabaque and Salmerón continue this trend with their mix of sunny and rainy spells.
The final stretch in this region, through Viana de Mondéjar and Cifuentes, sees drier conditions as you approach Mandayona and Atienza, closing with mostly sunny days and mild showers.
In Retortillo de Soria, the trail introduces overcast days with bursts of heavy rain interjected between sunshine. As you walk into Fresno de Caracena, the showers occasionally intensify, reaching more than 5 mm in a single day.
Onwards to San Esteban de Gormaz, the skies clear more frequently, although scattered showers persist. Approaching Quintanarraya, you encounter a mix of sun and cloudy spells interspersed with notable rainfall.
Santo Domingo de Silos marks another transition, with sun prevailing but still facing intermittent cloudy weather. In Mecerreyes, the conditions stabilize, with consecutive days of clear, sunny skies.
Burgos, the final destination, becomes a gateway to more erratic weather, where sunny intervals are frequently interrupted by heavier rain, especially notable during the last few days of the trail.
