Haute-Savoie

Starting from Les Houches, January brings frequent snowfall and long overcast stretches, with brief, bright breaks after fronts move through. Toward Les Contamines the snow remains the main story, sometimes falling steadily for hours; temperatures generally range from about -12 to 0°C. Crossing toward Tré-le-Champ and the slopes by La Flégère, higher ground often sees snowfall intensify during passing systems, while clear spells are crisp and very cold. As you loop back toward the valley, clouds commonly rebuild and fresh snow returns.

Aosta Valley

From the climb beyond Les Chapieux to the plateau near Rifugio Elisabetta, storms are frequent and snowfall can be heavy, with only short pauses under thin cloud. Down to Courmayeur, the valley can see a muted thaw on the mildest afternoons, but most days stay wintry; expect roughly -15 to 0°C overall. Heading up Val Ferret toward Rifugio Bonatti, it turns colder again and snow showers redevelop, with occasional clear, starlit nights between disturbances. Exposed ridges and cols can feel blustery during and just after snow.

Valais

Across into La Fouly the pattern stays wintry: light to moderate snow on many days, punctuated by quieter, grey spells. Around Champex-Lac there are sometimes longer lulls under overcast skies and a crisp, cold feel; temperatures hover mostly between about -12 and 2°C. Continuing toward the Col de la Forclaz, snow bands often return and can intensify on the approach to the pass, with visibility coming and going. When skies open, the air is clear and biting, and any sun is brief.
