From Les Houches through the valley toward the first climbs, skies are often grey, with regular light to moderate precipitation that falls as rain or wet snow low down and turns to snow with elevation. Short milder breaks bring damp, slightly softer conditions in the valley, but higher slopes stay wintry with frequent snow showers. After re-entering the region from Switzerland around Tré-le-Champ and La Flégère, the crest is commonly under cloud with recurring snowfall and only brief sunny spells. Temperatures mostly hover around freezing, dropping markedly on the exposed ridges.
Crossing past Les Chapieux toward Rifugio Elisabetta, weather shifts decisively to winter: repeated snowfalls, at times heavy enough to lay a deep cover on the high passes. In the Courmayeur valley, the air can moderate between systems, bringing overcast skies with cold rain or wet snow before the next front. Climbing again toward Rifugio Bonatti returns you to persistent subfreezing conditions and frequent snow showers, with only short clear intervals. Temperatures generally sit around freezing at valley level, much colder on the heights.
Around La Fouly, conditions remain changeable, with long cloudy stretches and light snow flurries, occasionally giving way to brighter breaks. Near Champex-Lac, lower elevation sometimes sees a rain–snow mix during milder intrusions, but any cooling shift quickly flips back to snowfall. Approaching Col de la Forclaz, higher ground turns wintry again with regular snow and cloud clinging to the ridges. Temperatures mostly sit around freezing, falling well below it on the passes.
