Weather forecast for the Camino Viejo in December

December on the Camino Viejo feels wintry and changeable. Most days are cloudy, with frequent light rain or drizzle and the odd heavier spell when Atlantic fronts pass through. Cold air settles in the valleys overnight, so mornings often start close to freezing, while afternoons are cool with only occasional mild breaks. Snow is possible on higher stretches and in shaded passes, and brief clear windows do appear between systems. Overall it’s a damp, chilly month with more gray than blue sky.

Navarra

Leaving Pamplona, overcast skies and passing showers are common, with occasional brighter breaks. Around Irurtzun, drizzle mixes with periods of steady rain, and colder snaps can flip precipitation to sleet or wet snow. Near Altsasu, elevation and exposure make snow showers more likely, though calm, clearer intervals also occur. Temperatures run from near freezing at dawn to the low teens on milder afternoons.

Álava

Crossing into Salvatierra, the pattern stays unsettled: low cloud with bouts of rain, at times briefly heavy. On the plateau, colder outbreaks can bring sleet or even a touch of freezing rain before skies open for a short sunny window. Around Vitoria, the mix continues with showery spells alternating with clearer periods. Expect nights around freezing and cool days that occasionally nudge into the low teens.

Castile and León

From La Puebla de Arganzón toward Miranda de Ebro, expect long cloudy stretches with intermittent light rain and some heavier pulses. Entering the Sobrón gorge and the higher ground around Quintana Martín Galíndez, cold spells can bring wet snow, with rapid shifts back to rain as temperatures wobble. Through Trespaderne and Valdivielso the sky often stays gray, with on‑and‑off drizzle and only short sunny interludes. Approaching Pesquera de Ebro and Orbaneja del Castillo, the mix of light rain and occasional snowfall persists; temperatures generally range from around freezing at night to the low teens on milder days.

Cantabria

Past Polientes, low cloud and drizzle are frequent, sometimes building into steady rain. Around Villanueva de la Nía, colder incursions can drop snow even at valley level before another showery spell moves through. The approach to Aguilar de Campoo remains changeable, alternating between damp overcast and brief clearer windows. Temperatures typically sit near freezing at dawn and rise to the single digits or low teens by afternoon.
