In February, the Pennine Way experiences a mix of winter weather conditions across its various regions. Starting in Greater Manchester & West Yorkshire, walkers will encounter light freezing rain, patchy snow, and periods of moderate rain, with temperatures often dipping below freezing at night. In the Yorkshire Dales, similar conditions persist, with heavy rain interspersed with moderate snow and occasional sunny intervals. As the trail moves into the North Pennines, the weather remains predominantly overcast with regular snow showers and rain, and cold temperatures are common. Finally, in Northumberland, while rain remains a constant companion, temperatures rise slightly, offering occasional sunny breaks.
The trek begins at Edale and progresses through Crowden, Standedge, and Calder Valley. Initially, light freezing rain and cloudy skies dominate, with temperatures hovering around freezing. As the trail enters Crowden, patchy moderate snow and heavy rain disrupt the journey, though occasional sunny spells offer brief respite. In Standedge, the weather fluctuates between overcast conditions and snow showers, while further along in Calder Valley, moderate rain and overcast skies prevail.
Starting at Ponden, the weather showcases a blend of heavy rain and occasional snow, with temperatures frequently dipping below zero overnight. Through Thornton-in-Craven and Malham, similar patterns continue, accentuated by periods of moderate rain. At Horton in Ribblesdale and beyond, heavy rain showers and cloud cover persist, with intermittent sunny intervals providing some relief.
Upon reaching Baldersdale, the pathway remains dominated by overcast skies and sporadic snow showers, keeping temperatures mostly below freezing. Langdon Beck experiences heavy snowfall and persistent cloudiness, adding to the wintery feel. In Dufton and Garrigill, the mix of moderate rain and snow showers continues, while Slaggyford sees occasional breaks in the cloud cover.
A transition to milder temperatures occurs as walkers enter Greenhead and proceed through Once Brewed, Bellingham, and Byrness. Cloudy, rainy spells dominate, though the occasional sunny break reduces some of the chill. In Windy Gyle and finally Kirk Yetholm, patchy rain and overcast skies welcome the hikers, culminating the route's typical February weather pattern.
