January on St. Olavsleden is deep winter. Most days are cloudy and snow is frequent, with occasional heavier bursts. Temperatures stay below freezing much of the time; colder spells settle inland and in the high ground, while short milder pushes nearer the coast can bring sleet or drizzle. Clear spells do occur between systems, but they are brief and often sharply cold. Overall the month feels grey and snowy, with short brighter breaks.
From the coast westward, the month leans overcast with regular snow showers and periods of steady, at times heavy, snowfall. Near the sea there are brief thaws that mix in sleet or light drizzle, but inland the precipitation falls mainly as snow. Between systems, skies can open to crisp, clear cold before cloud and snow return. Daytime often sits around freezing by the coast and stays below freezing farther inland, with nights much colder.
Crossing into the uplands, snowfall becomes more persistent and the air turns sharper. Around the large lake basins, cloud lingers with light to moderate snow, then west toward the valleys and passes the snow intensifies at times and can arrive in prolonged bursts. Short, bright interludes follow some fronts, bringing very dry, biting cold before the next wave. Temperatures are mostly well below freezing, dropping markedly in the hills.
Once over the border, a milder maritime influence appears. Snow is still frequent, but it alternates with sleet or rain in passing mild spells, especially closer to the fjord, and heavy snow showers can still sweep through. Cloud dominates much of the way, with occasional clearer pauses before the next band. Readings sit near freezing much of the time, with slightly colder nights inland and brief thaws nearer the coast.
