In September, the "Vía de la Plata" trail experiences diverse weather as it winds through several regions in Spain. Starting in Andalusia, the weather is predominantly hot and sunny with occasional rain showers. As the trail continues into Extremadura, temperatures remain high with similar conditions, but rainfall becomes sparser and more isolated. In Castile and León, the climate begins to shift with cooler temperatures and more regular rain, especially towards the latter parts of the trail. Finally, in Galicia, the weather becomes significantly wetter and cooler, with frequent rain showers punctuating sunny intervals, indicative of the region's reputation for unpredictable weather.
Walking through Andalusia, temperatures often climb into the high 30s. In Sevilla, walkers can expect a mix of sunny days and some rain showers early in the month, often paired with quite warm nights. As the journey progresses to Guillena and then Castilblanco de los Arroyos, the heat remains intense. Even though rainfall is rare, when it does occur, it can be quite heavy, but these are scattered events across the days.
Transitioning into Extremadura, the weather remains hot with sunny skies prevailing in places like Monesterio and Fuente de Cantos. Rainfall is generally minimal, but occasional clouds and patchy rain provide brief respite from the sun. Moving further north through Zafra and Mérida, sunny weather remains true, with rain still infrequent but increasingly possible as the month progresses.
In Castile and León, as the trail continues northwest, a noticeable shift occurs. In Salamanca, the temperatures drop slightly and the weather patterns change to more frequent rain showers, interspersed with clear days. Villages like El Cubo del Vino see temperatures moderate while the rain becomes more likely.
As trekkers enter Galicia, the weather becomes even more variable with cooler temperatures and regular rain showers. From A Gudiña to Santiago de Compostela, the trail is marked with a mix of moderate sunshine and repeated rain. This region is often overcast, with showers occurring more consistently, emphasizing Galicia's lush, green landscape.
