January on the Jakobsweg Via Regia is firmly wintry. Most days are cloudy with frequent light to moderate snowfall, and milder pulses swap in drizzle or light rain. Cold dominates, often at or below freezing, but brief thaws pass through and leave things damp or slushy. Clear spells do happen, yet they are usually short before cloud and showers return.

Starting in Görlitz and the eastern stretches, days are cold and mostly overcast, with regular light to moderate snowfall. Through Buchholz, Bautzen and St. Marienstern toward Königsbrück, snow alternates with drizzle or light rain when short thaws arrive, so surfaces flip between powdery and wet. Past Schönfeld, Großenhain and the Elbe near Strehla, the pattern stays changeable, with occasional heavier bursts and only brief brighter breaks. Approaching Leipzig and Kleinliebenau, it remains wintry and damp, with temperatures mostly below freezing and only short lifts a few degrees above.
Crossing into Merseburg, skies stay grey and precipitation shifts between wet snow and light rain during milder interludes. Through Freyburg and Roßbach, expect repeated snow showers broken by quieter spells and the odd drizzle. Around Eckartsberga, passing fronts can bring a short spell of heavier precipitation before easing back to flurries. Temperatures hover around freezing with occasional, brief bumps above it.
From Stedten am Ettersberg into Erfurt and Gotha, the cold tightens again, with frequent overcast and recurring snow, sometimes falling steadily. Westward through Hastrungsfeld and Eisenach, showers cycle in and out: mainly snow, with drizzle or light rain only during brief thaws. Around Oberellen and Vacha, snowfall can be more persistent, punctuated by short, clearer windows. Temperatures are generally around or below freezing throughout this stretch.
