Weather forecast for the Wicklow Way in May

May on the Wicklow Way is changeable and often damp. Cloud cover is common, with frequent light showers or drizzle, yet many hours pass dry and there are occasional brighter breaks. At times a slow-moving band brings steadier rain, but it rarely lasts all day. Temperatures feel cool to mild, comfortable for steady walking. Breezes are usually gentle, becoming livelier on exposed upland sections.

Starting out through the Dublin Mountains, expect plenty of overcast skies with on-and-off drizzle. Brief pulses of heavier rain can sweep through, but they tend to be short-lived, with calm, grey interludes in between.

Across the uplands toward Roundwood and down to the lakes at Glendalough, the pattern stays mixed: low cloud and light drizzle are frequent, interspersed with clearer windows in the valleys. Now and then a more organised spell of rain crosses the hills, followed by brighter gaps as it clears.

Through the Glenmalure valley and over the higher ridges toward Moyne, many stretches are mostly dry under a blanket of cloud. Passing showers still pop up, and the tops can sit in mist after rain before lifting again.

Farther south around Shillelagh, showers become more scattered with longer dry breaks, and mild afternoons are possible when the cloud thins. Temperatures typically sit in the low to mid-teens Celsius, feeling cooler in a breeze or under persistent cloud.

Approaching Clonegal on lower ground, you can catch some sunny spells between showers. There remains a chance of a day dominated by rain if a frontal band arrives, but many days finish mostly dry and calm.
