Alta Via 1 (Dolomites): when to start
For most walkers, starting in June to August gives the best conditions on the Alta Via 1 (Dolomites) from Lago di Braies to La Pissa. By then the high passes are mostly clear of snow, the rifugi are open, transport links are running, and daylight is long—though you should still expect quick weather shifts and afternoon showers or thunderstorms. Start early, carry good waterproofs and a warm layer, and book huts ahead in peak weeks.
This is a high, mostly treeline‑free route on limestone ground. Mornings are usually steadier; afternoons can turn lively with convection. Nights are cool even in midsummer, and short cold snaps can dust the highest sections.
June
- Feel: cool and changeable, with a mix of bright spells and frequent showers. Crisp air and good visibility between systems.
- Conditions: lingering snow patches possible on higher passes, especially early month. Nights can be cold.
- Why go: a touch quieter than peak season; clear views after rain. Consider poles and light traction if you’re very early.
July–August
- Feel: classic Dolomites summer—comfortable at mid‑elevations, cool on ridges. Bright mornings, building cloud, regular afternoon showers or thunderstorms.
- Conditions: mostly dry underfoot early in the day; brief sleet or a dusting is possible on the highest crests during passing fronts.
- Tips: start early to dodge storms, keep a flexible lunch/siesta window for weather, and reserve rifugi well in advance.
September (shoulder)
- Cooler, more variable. Expect a mix of sunshine and showers with a growing chance of light snow higher up.
- Some huts start closing mid to late month; days are shorter and nights feel cold at elevation.
October
- Late‑autumn pattern: frequent cloud, regular light rain, and early season snow on higher ground. Brisk on passes. Feasible only in settled spells and usually better for shorter sections.
November–April
- Winter dominates: frequent snowfall, sub‑freezing temperatures up high, short days, and poor visibility during passing systems. This is a ski/mountaineering season rather than a walking one.
May
- In‑between and unsettled. High terrain often keeps winter traits (late snowfalls, freezing nights); lower sections are cool and wet. Not reliable for a full traverse.
General trail note
- The AV1 spends long stretches above treeline on limestone terrain with limited water between huts. Weather flips quickly; keep an eye on the sky, start early, and be ready to pause during afternoon storms.
