When is the best time to walk the Camino de Santiago?

For most first-time pilgrims, the safest all-round windows are May, June, September, and early October.

Quick answer: spring and early autumn are usually the easiest balance of weather, daylight, and open services. July and August work well on cooler northern trails, but they get hot and crowded inland. Winter is possible only if you deliberately choose the mildest sections and accept shorter days plus more rain.

Use the month guide below if you mostly know your travel month. Use the trail comparison if you are still deciding between Francés, the Portuguese family, Del Norte, and Primitivo.

Camino weather by month

This table is intentionally broad. It helps you narrow the month first, then jump into a trail-specific page.

Month What the month is usually like Good trail to inspect next
January Usually too cold, wet, or muddy for a first Camino. Only the mildest Portuguese sections stay reasonable.

February Still a specialist month. Conditions improve slightly in the Portuguese family, but winter tradeoffs remain real.

March Early spring starts to open up the Portuguese trails first, while inland and mountain trails can still be volatile.

April A strong shoulder-season month. Portuguese trails, Francés, and many coastal trails become much easier to recommend.

May One of the safest all-round Camino months, with long days, open services, and manageable temperatures on many trails.

June Excellent on most trails. Northern and higher trails become much easier while heat is usually still manageable inland.

July Good if you want Del Norte or other cooler coastal trails. Inland trails get hot and crowded fast.
Camino del Norte

August Still workable, but you need to choose your trail carefully. Northern and coastal trails cope better than Francés or the hotter inland sections.
Camino del Norte

September One of the best overall months: still warm, but usually less punishing than peak summer and less crowded on some trails.

October A very good shoulder-season month, especially for Portuguese trails and many Francés itineraries, with increasing rain risk later in the month.

November Late-autumn tradeoffs arrive quickly: more rain, shorter days, and patchier services on the quieter trails.

December A winter month again. Plan only if you genuinely want a quiet, weather-led Camino and you are choosing the mildest trail sections on purpose.

Compare the main Camino trail options

Use the month guide above if you already know when you want to travel. The cards below show the best time to start each trail, matching the route-specific Best Time guides.

If seasonality is your first filter, these are the first Camino options to compare.

Camino Francés

Best time to start: April to mid May, or September to early October.

The Francés is the easiest trail to organize and has the strongest services, so spring starts and early-autumn starts give the friendliest all-round mix of weather, daylight, and logistics.

Watch for: July and August heat, crowds, and fully booked accommodation in the busiest sections.

Portuguese Camino trails

Best time to start: Depends on which Portuguese trail you choose.

The Portuguese family does not have one universal sweet spot. Lisbon, Porto, and Tui/Vigo shift the balance of heat, rain, and trip length enough that the right answer depends on where you join.

Watch for: Lisbon is the longest and hottest option in summer, while Porto and Tui/Vigo usually work best a bit later in the year.

Choose your start:

Lisbon (Central)

Best time to start: mid March to mid May, or November.

Porto (Coastal)

Best time to start: May to June, or late August to early September.

Tui or Vigo

Best time to start: May to June, or late August to September.

Camino del Norte

Best time to start: March to early June.

Del Norte is strongest from spring into early summer, when the coast is green, daylight is long, and you avoid the hotter, busier stretch of high summer.

Watch for: Late June through summer gets busier and warmer, while autumn is still workable only if you do not mind wetter days.

Camino Primitivo

Best time to start: May, or mid July to mid September.

Primitivo has two sweet spots: greener, cooler spring walking in May, then the clearer and drier high-ground stretch from mid July into mid September.

Watch for: June and early July can stay unsettled, while late autumn brings mud, fog, and harsher conditions on the high passes.
