Weather forecast for the Alta Via 1 (Dolomites) in March

March on the Alta Via 1 still feels like winter. Most days are cold, with a lot of cloud and regular snowfall at altitude, broken by short clear spells. Ridges and passes are often windy, and blowing snow can cut visibility. Lower stretches are a little milder and can see wet snow or drizzle, but the overall feel stays wintry. Temperatures are mostly sub‑zero in the high mountains, edging toward low single digits in sheltered lower areas.

South Tyrol

From the lakeside start into the first climbs, skies are often overcast with frequent light to moderate snowfall, though brief sunny breaks appear between systems. As you gain height toward the high saddle and plateau, snow becomes more persistent and can arrive in heavier pulses, with gusty winds on exposed ground and occasional whiteout. Clear, crisp windows do occur, but cloud tends to rebuild quickly. Temperatures run mostly sub‑zero, nudging toward freezing in short, sheltered sunny spells.

Belluno

On the high crests around Lagazuoi and Nuvolau, it stays wintry: frequent snow with occasional heavy bursts, low cloud, and strong ridge winds that blow spindrift and reduce visibility. Dropping toward Città di Fiume and Coldai, snow showers alternate with dull, overcast stretches, with short bright windows between passing fronts. Through Vazzoler and Bruto Carestiato the pattern remains mixed—light snow on the tops and a rain–snow mix on milder days—while cloud often dominates. From Sommariva al Pramperét and Pian de Fontana to the final descent to La Pissa, weather swings between fresh snow or cold drizzle and clearer spells, with temperatures ranging from well below freezing on the heights to low single digits near the end.
