May on the Alta Via 1 feels unsettled, with more cloud than sun and frequent wet spells. Higher sections still behave like winter: cold air, late snowfalls, and nights near freezing. Lower and mid elevations trend cool to mild on better days, but showers are common and can turn into steady rain for hours. Clear windows do occur between systems, offering brighter, calmer walking, yet they rarely last long. Expect sharp contrasts as you move through elevation bands, with quick flips between snow and rain.

From Lago di Braies the month often starts grey, with light drizzle or rain interrupting short brighter spells. As the path climbs toward the Biella area, the air turns sharply colder and late-season snowfall is common, sometimes in heavier bursts that leave the landscape wintry again. Dropping into the Fanes basins, conditions alternate between overcast skies, passing snow showers on colder days, and light rain or drizzle when temperatures lift; nights stay near freezing. Overall it feels cold, with temperatures around freezing to the low single digits.
At the high huts around Lagazuoi and Nuvolau, May remains firmly wintry. Snowfall is frequent at these elevations, with several days seeing moderate to heavy snow, and the mix can switch to sleet or light rain in brief milder spells. Cloud dominates, but there are occasional clearer breaks between systems; nights are very cold.
South of there, around Città di Fiume and Coldai, the pattern eases slightly but stays mixed: light drizzle and overcast are common, punctuated by showers and occasional heavier rain. Around Vazzoler and Bruto Carestiato, you get more breaks of brighter weather, yet passing fronts still bring bands of rain, and a late snow flurry is still possible on colder snaps. Skies often shuffle between dull and showery rather than settling into a long dry stretch.
Further on toward Sommariva al Pramperét and Pian de Fontana, wet spells become more frequent, with several days of steady rain and some heavier bursts. Cloud cover remains widespread, though a few warm, calm interludes do appear before the next system arrives. Reaching the lower end at La Pissa, it turns milder and more often rainy than snowy, with showers giving way at times to longer periods of rain. Overall the Belluno stretch feels cool to mild, mostly in the single digits to low teens.
