Weather forecast for the Alta Via 1 (Dolomites) in September

September on the Alta Via 1 feels like early autumn in the Dolomites. Expect a changeable mix of cool sunshine, cloud, and frequent showers, with occasional heavier rain when fronts pass. Higher sections can see a brief dusting of snow, while lower terrain stays milder and wet rather than white. Days are generally cool, and nights are notably chilly at elevation. Clear, settled spells do occur, but the pattern leans more variable than midsummer, so you move between bright breaks and overcast stretches through the month.

South Tyrol

From the lakeside start into the first high ground, skies flip between bright spells and overcast layers, with passing light rain and the odd longer soak. As you gain altitude toward the early huts, the air turns distinctly cooler and showers become more frequent; brief clear windows often follow a front. A dusting of early snow is possible on the highest passes, but most precipitation falls as rain. Nights feel chilly at elevation even after sunny afternoons.

Belluno

Across the high crests around the first Belluno huts, days often run cool and unsettled, with drizzle or light rain broken by clearer gaps. When systems move through, rain can turn steady or heavy for a time, and the loftiest ridges may pick up a brief snowfall. Between fronts, brighter hours develop, but clouds usually rebuild.

South through the Civetta group and on toward the remote middle huts, the pattern stays changeable: many mostly cloudy days, intermittent light rain, and some heavier bursts. As you lose elevation, temperatures feel milder and precipitation falls mainly as rain, with snow limited to the highest rims after cooler nights. Approaching the forested descent to the finish, dry windows become a bit more regular, though showery spells can still sweep through.
