For most walkers, starting in October to February gives the best conditions on the Camino del Azahar. This route leaves the mild Mediterranean around Cartagena and crosses long, open farmland toward Pétrola. Shade is scarce and summer heat lingers, so the cooler months make the days feel manageable and pleasant.
Expect mostly comfortable walking weather with periodic showers, brighter stretches between systems, and colder mornings as you climb onto the La Mancha plateau. Days are shorter, so steady pacing and an early start help. Pack light layers, a breathable rain shell, and a warm hat/gloves for inland starts.
Practical tips:
Spring can swing from lovely to soggy in a day. You’ll find mild spells, then wind or a soaking. It’s fine if you’re flexible—bring rain gear and expect muddy tracks, especially inland.
Sun exposure becomes the main issue. Even with the odd shower or storm, daytime heat builds on the open plains. If you go, start at dawn, shorten stages, and carry extra water.
High summer is hot to very hot with long, shadeless stretches and limited resupply. Attempt it only with a heat-aware plan: pre‑dawn starts, long midday breaks, and rigorous hydration.
Heat often lingers, especially away from the coast, and short, intense coastal downpours are possible. Experienced hikers can make it work, but most will be happier waiting for October.
Of course, while these recommendations provide a solid starting point, everyone's preferences and circumstances are unique. Our search tool allows you to customize your journey to align with your specific needs and preferences, ensuring the best possible experience on the Camino.
