When is the best time to walk the Camino del Estrecho?
For most walkers, starting in late April to early June, or late September to early October gives the best conditions on the Camino del Estrecho (Algeciras to Puerto Real). Expect comfortable warmth, long daylight, and mostly dry tracks, with spring flowers or clear early‑autumn skies and sea-breezes to take the edge off the sun.
This route mixes windy coastal stretches near Tarifa with open farmland on La Janda and cork oak hills around Medina‑Sidonia—beautiful but exposed in heat and squalls—so timing pays off.
Late April to early June (prime spring)
- Why it works: Pleasant warmth, long days, and mostly dry paths, with the landscape at its greenest. Shade in the cork oak woods helps, and breezes near the Strait are usually welcome rather than punishing.
- What to expect: Mostly sunny or partly cloudy days with the odd passing shower. Changeable at times in April, but it settles as you move into May. Wildflowers and lively birdlife across the wetlands and fields.
- Pack for: Strong sun, a light wind layer for Levante gusts near Tarifa, and a simple rain cover for spring showers.
Late September to early October (prime autumn)
- Why it works: Summer heat has eased but you still get bright, warm days and comfortable evenings. The sea is at its friendliest for a quick dip on coastal stretches.
- What to expect: Mostly dry with occasional showers or a short stormy spell as autumn starts to turn. Trails can get slick after a burst of rain, then dry quickly.
- Pack for: Sun protection first, with a light shell for a surprise squall.
June to August (hot and exposed)
- The challenge: Strong sun, very warm afternoons, and little shade on the open sections around La Janda and the approaches to Medina-Sidonia. Rain is rare, so there’s no relief from heat.
- If you go: Start at first light, plan shorter days, carry plenty of water, and expect wind to add fatigue—especially if the Levante blows hard near Tarifa.
November to March (wet, windy, shorter days)
- The challenge: Frequent rain, blustery winds, and muddy farm tracks. You can get lovely clear days, but they’re mixed with unsettled spells and earlier sunsets.
- Good to know: Some small-town services may be on reduced hours. Be flexible with stage lengths when storms roll through, and watch for slippery clay after heavy rain.
Early April and mid–late October (edges of the good seasons)
- A decent bet if you don’t mind variety. Early April can feel like spring one day and a rain shower the next. Late October often delivers fine walking days but is more changeable than early October.
- Bring layers and expect a bit of everything: sun, cloud, and the odd breezy or showery day.
A quick note on wind
The Strait is famous for two winds: Levante (from the east) and Poniente (from the west). Either can blow at any time of year. Most days it’s just a steady breeze, but when it ramps up—especially the Levante near Tarifa—it can make exposed sections slower and cooler than the sun suggests. A light windproof is worth its weight year‑round.
Of course, while these recommendations provide a solid starting point, everyone's preferences and circumstances are
unique. For example, if you prefer walking in the cooler morning hours to avoid midday heat, you might prioritize dates with
drier conditions. On the other hand, if you are more accustomed to colder climates, you may choose to avoid hotter
periods - even if it means encountering more rain. Our search tool allows you to customize your journey to align with your specific needs and preferences, ensuring the
best possible experience on the Camino.
