For most walkers, starting in mid June to August gives the best conditions on the GR 20 from Calenzana to Conca. By then the high ridge of “Fra li Monti” is usually clear of lingering snow, daylight is long, and services are fully open—ideal for linking the big, rocky stages without winter kit.
Corsica’s crest behaves like an alpine environment above a Mediterranean base: strong sun, quick changes, and cooler nights at altitude. Summer brings mostly dry, walkable spells with occasional short showers or a thundery burst. Plan early starts to dodge valley heat and make the most of the daylight.
What makes this the pick:
What to watch for:
Cooler nights and fresher air, with the route mostly clear but the odd snow patch lingering in shaded gullies, especially in the north. Showery days still pop up, yet there are plenty of bright, walkable windows. It’s a great balance of conditions with fewer people than peak summer.
Warm to hot at low elevation, pleasantly cooler on the crest. Many days are dry and bright, with some afternoons seeing cloud build and a brief, local shower. It’s peak season for services and also for foot traffic—start early and be patient at the chains and scrambles.
Similar to July but a touch hotter and drier lower down. The ridge often feels fine for walking while valley approaches can bake. A few days bring lively downpours; most pass quickly. Late in the month, nights begin to cool.
Spring is still unsettled at altitude. High cols can hold firm snow and ice, and wet slabs and chains make the technical bits serious. Expect stop–start weather with showery days and the chance of late snow. Suitable for experienced parties ready to turn back or carry winter gear; not ideal for a standard thru-hike.
Still a popular choice: warm days, cooler nights, fewer crowds. However, the pattern turns more changeable. You can get lovely clear runs, but also grey, damp spells and the first autumn storms sweeping the ridge. Shorter daylight means earlier finishes help.
This is winter in the high Corsican mountains. Frequent storms, cold, and regular snow and ice make the crest a mountaineering undertaking. Many facilities are closed or unstaffed. Unless you have the skills, kit, and a flexible plan for winter conditions, save the traverse for the summer window.
