• Practicalities: Refuges, shops, buses, and taxis mostly run. Water can be limited on some stages in hot spells—fill up before long climbs. Wildflowers and waterfalls shine in late June/early July; August is busier and hotter in the valleys.

September — a quieter, crisper tail

Still very feasible if you’re flexible. You’ll get plenty of clear walking windows and pleasant valley temperatures, but nights are colder and a first dusting of snow can land on the highest passes. Daylight shortens and some services begin to wind down.

April to early June — spring below, winter clinging up high

Lower valleys can be lovely between showers, yet the big passes often hold snow and see fresh falls in unsettled spells. Stages may be awkward or unsafe without winter skills and equipment. Better for day hikes or waiting a few weeks.

October to March — into winter conditions

Frequent fronts, regular snow on the high ground, and cold, windy passes turn the loop into a winter mountaineering project. Not suited to a standard trek unless you have winter experience and gear, and a flexible plan.
