Weather forecast for the GR 54 in March

March on the GR54 still feels like winter. Snowfall is frequent across the high ground, with long overcast spells punctuated by short, bright breaks. Lower valleys are more mixed: mostly cloudy, with occasional light showers or drizzle on milder days and some dry, sunny windows. Temperatures are generally cold—below freezing up high and cool at lower elevations—and they swing quickly with passing disturbances. Precipitation comes in bursts, and heavy snow is possible, especially around the higher cols and refuges. Calm, settled stretches do occur, but they are brief; overall the trail feels damp and wintry rather than springlike.

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

From Le Bourg-d'Oisans, expect changeable skies with a mix of overcast and brief clear spells, and snow showers even at lower elevations. Climbing toward Clavans-le-Bas, snowfall becomes more frequent, and on the traverse to the Refuge des Mouterres it often turns persistent, with heavy bursts separated by short lulls. Across this sector, temperatures run from well below freezing at altitude to cool single digits in the valleys.

Dropping into Le Désert en Valjouffrey and Valsenestre, the lower valleys stay mostly cloudy and unsettled, with a mix of light snow and, on milder pulses, drizzle or light rain, plus occasional brighter windows. The climb to the Refuge de la Muzelle typically returns to full winter, with frequent snow and periods of heavier falls under stubborn cloud. Back toward Le Bourg-d'Oisans the pattern remains variable, alternating overcast and clearer breaks, with intermittent snow still possible.

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Around the Refuge de l'Alpe de Villar-d'Arène the weather is firmly wintry: many overcast days, repeated snowfalls, and occasional short clearings. Snow can arrive in sustained bursts, and the high ground stays sharply cold.

Dropping through Le Monêtier-les-Bains to Vallouise, conditions are more changeable: cloud dominates but there are brighter interludes, and precipitation flips between dry spells and fresh snow. On the milder side of these swings, the valley floors may briefly feel cool rather than bitter, while higher slopes keep a wintry feel. Across this stretch, temperatures range from deeply subfreezing at the refuges to a few degrees above freezing in the valleys.

Turning toward the Refuge du Pré de la Chaumette and Refuge de Vallonpierre, expect a return to frequent snowfall under mostly overcast skies, with only short breaks in between. Descending to La Chapelle-en-Valgaudémar brings more mixed conditions, including light drizzle or wet snow on milder pulses amid otherwise snowy spells. The final climb to the Refuge des Souffles is often snowy again, with cloud lingering and occasional heavier bursts.
