Weather forecast for the GR 54 in August

August on the GR54 feels summer‑leaning but changeable. Valleys are warm to hot, while the high cols and refuges stay cool and can turn brisk in passing weather. Mornings often start bright, then clouds build; brief afternoon showers or thunderstorms are frequent, though many days remain dry and sunny. At times a greyer, wetter spell settles in for a day. A short cold snap can brush the highest passes with sleet or even a rare dusting of snow. Nights are mild down low and notably cooler with altitude.

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

From Le Bourg-d'Oisans up toward Clavans-le-Bas and the Refuge des Mouterres, the pattern is classic Alpine August: clear starts, cloud building, and scattered afternoon showers or a storm on some days. Valley afternoons are mostly in the 20s to low 30s °C, but it feels much cooler on the high ground. Around the plateau and ridges, low cloud and drizzle can hang in, with the odd burst of heavier rain; mornings can be crisp before any sun breaks through.

Dropping into Le Désert en Valjouffrey and Valsenestre, brighter and warmer intervals are common between passing showers, with some runs of fully sunny days. The climb to the Refuge de la Muzelle is more exposed and changeable, where cloud can sit on the tops and periods of steady rain are possible. Returning to Le Bourg-d'Oisans, heat often rebuilds with a renewed chance of late‑day storms, though settled, sunny spells also occur.

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

Around the Refuge de l'Alpe de Villar-d'Arène the air is cooler and often damp, with low cloud, drizzle, and—during brief cold snaps—sleet or a rare summer snow flurry on the highest ground. Dropping to Le Monêtier-les-Bains and Vallouise brings sunnier breaks and warmer afternoons, with the usual risk of an isolated thunderstorm late in the day. Valley afternoons usually sit in the 20s to low 30s °C.

Climbing again toward the Refuge du Pré de la Chaumette and the Refuge de Vallonpierre, cloud tends to build over the ridges, producing showers and occasional downpours; some days turn into longer, gray, wet spells. Descending the Valgaudemar around La Chapelle often brings a drier, sunnier window before the final rise to the Refuge des Souffles. Up high, the mix returns: variable cloud, light showers in passing, and clearer evenings when the air turns noticeably cooler.
