Weather forecast for the GR 54 in September

September on the GR54 is changeable but generally kind. Days are often mild with bright spells, especially lower down, while higher ground feels crisp. Sunshine and cloud trade places, with frequent light showers; some days turn into steady rain or deliver a short, heavy burst. The highest cols can see an early dusting of snow and chilly nights, yet most days still offer clear walking windows between passing systems. Winds are usually light to moderate, stronger on exposed passes.

Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

From the Oisans valley into the first high cols, mornings often start clear or partly cloudy before cloud builds over the ridges. Overall, days feel mostly mild, but the air turns cool and damp as you climb, with light drizzle or a brief shower never far away. When Atlantic fronts pass, the rain can set in for a time, then break to bright, breezy spells.

Across the deep Valjouffrey and Valsenestre valleys, sunshine returns in windows between systems, though afternoons remain prone to scattered showers. The long pull to the Muzelle is more fickle, with low cloud clinging to the cols and the chance of a fleeting high-level snow flurry after a cool night. The descent back toward the Oisans usually brings warmer, longer dry spells, but a last passing shower can still catch you.

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

High around the Alpe de Villar-d'Arène the weather is brisk and changeable, with fast-moving cloud and occasional light rain. Dropping into the Guisane and then the Vallouise valleys, skies open to longer sunny spells and only brief showers, and days are generally mild to warm. Between systems the air feels clear and calm.

Turning back into the high Ecrins toward the Pré de la Chaumette and Vallonpierre, cloud thickens on the ridges and showers become more frequent. At times the rain settles in for several hours, and a quick dusting of snow can appear on the highest cols and around the huts after a cold night. Exposed saddles can be breezy until the sky clears again.

Down the Valgaudemar, brighter intervals are common and the valley often stays drier, though bands of light rain still drift through. The final climb to Souffles returns to cooler air and patchy cloud, with a chance of a sharp shower near the crest. After fronts pass, visibility improves quickly and the evenings turn crisp.
