Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Leaving the Oisans valley, skies are often overcast with intermittent snowfalls; brief milder spells can bring sleet or wet snow at valley level. As the route climbs toward the higher plateaus, cloud thickens and snowfall becomes more frequent, with occasional heavy bursts during frontal passages. Clear breaks do occur between systems, turning the cold sharper and the air very dry. Through this stretch, temperatures typically span roughly from -15°C on the highest ground to just above freezing in the valleys.

Crossing into the Valjouffrey side and on toward Valsenestre, the pattern stays wintry: mostly cloudy with periodic light to moderate snow, easing at times into drier, grey days. The return to high ground around the Muzelle is harsher, with persistent sub-zero conditions, blowing snow on exposed cols, and a risk of whiteout during passing storms. Descents back to the valley finish with alternating overcast and clearer spells, and occasional sleet in the lowest sections during brief thaws.

Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

From the high ground near the Alpe de Villar-d’Arène, December brings frequent snow showers to outright snowstorms under long overcast stretches. Dropping into the Guisane and Vallouise valleys, precipitation ebbs at times and skies may brighten, though cloud often returns quickly. Mild pulses can turn precipitation mixed near the valley floors, while exposed slopes stay firmly wintry. Across this part of the loop, temperatures run roughly from -15°C on the highest terrain to a little above freezing down low.

Climbing toward Pré de la Chaumette and Vallonpierre, snow-bearing fronts cycle through, sometimes with heavy falls and gusty winds over the passes. Between systems, the air turns clear and very cold, then cloud rebuilds as the route swings into Valgaudemar. Lower down around La Chapelle, spells of lighter precipitation and overcast alternate with brief brighter windows. The final rise to the Souffles area often sees renewed snow showers and drifting in exposed sections.
