January on the GR54 is full winter. Skies lean overcast much of the time, with frequent snowfall that can turn heavy during passing systems, then short clear breaks. Air stays cold across the route, mostly below freezing, and it feels far colder on the high ground; in the lowest valleys a brief thaw may bring wet snow or a touch of sleet. Sunshine appears between storms but rarely holds for long. Overall it is a snowy, cold month with limited dry spells.

From Le Bourg-d'Oisans, the route climbs toward Clavans-le-Bas and on to the high ground around Refuge des Mouterres. Days are often cloudy with regular snowfall, and storms can deliver long bursts of heavy snow, followed by bright, very cold lulls. Temperatures sit mostly below freezing for the region, much colder on the exposed heights. Clear windows do occur, but they are usually short between systems.
Dropping into Le Désert en Valjouffrey and Valsenestre, the weather stays wintry with overcast spells and frequent snow showers; a brief thaw can bring wetter snow or sleet in the valley bottoms. Climbing again toward Refuge de la Muzelle, the air sharpens and snowfall becomes more persistent, with periods of low cloud and whiteout. Returning toward Le Bourg-d'Oisans, expect the mix to alternate between snow showers and clearer breaks, with longer dry intervals only after fronts pass.
Starting high at Refuge de l'Alpe de Villar-d'Arène, January brings deep cold and frequent snowfall under mostly overcast skies, with occasional crisp clear spells. As you descend toward Le Monêtier-les-Bains, cloud often lingers and snow remains likely, though the valley can see short sunny breaks between systems. Temperatures are generally below freezing in this region, much colder on the high cols; during brief lulls the lowest valleys may hover near freezing.
Crossing toward Vallouise and up to Refuge du Pré de la Chaumette, the pattern stays unsettled, with alternating light to heavy snow and quieter, clear intervals. High sections are commonly in cloud during systems, then stark, dry, and frigid once they pass.
From Refuge de Vallonpierre down to La Chapelle-en-Valgaudémar and up to Refuge des Souffles, expect another run of overcast days and frequent snow, punctuated by short sunny interludes. Valley floors can see wet snow in a rare mild push, but most precipitation falls as snow. Finishing on the high ground, prolonged snowfall is possible, before a sharp, bright pause returns.
