When to walk the Camino de Levante (Valencia to Zamora)
The ideal months to start the Camino de Levante are March to April, or mid September to October. These windows dodge the harsh summer heat on the La Mancha plains and the sharp winter cold in Castilla y León, giving most walkers steady, comfortable days with the odd shower.
Think of the route as a Mediterranean beginning that soon turns continental: longer, more exposed stages with little shade. Spring and autumn offer kinder temperatures, workable daylight, and services that are more reliably open than in winter.
March–April (best)
- Why it works: Cooler days for the plains, greener fields, and more forgiving climbs as you near the north.
- What to expect: A swing between bright days and passing showers; occasional heavier rain near the coast and in the final weeks into Castilla y León. Mornings can be chilly, especially up north.
- Tips: Carry a light shell and a warm layer. Trails are quieter than on the main Camino routes, but more places are open than in winter.
Mid to late September–October (best)
- Why it works: The summer heat eases across La Mancha while nights are still mild.
- What to expect: Mostly pleasant walking with some unsettled days. The Valencian coast can see autumn storm bursts; inland you’ll meet cooler mornings and a few rainy spells as you approach Zamora.
- Tips: Plan flexible days for the odd heavy shower, and start early if a warm spell lingers.
May (good, trending warm)
- Pros: Lush landscapes and long days.
- Watch-outs: Heat starts to build on the exposed stretches, and spring storms pop up here and there. Early starts and steady water stops help.
Early September (borderline)
- Pros: Quiet paths and open services.
- Watch-outs: Summer heat often hangs on, especially across Castilla–La Mancha. If you can, shift your start to mid or late month.
June–August (generally not advised)
- Expect strong sun, little shade, and long water carries on the plains. Afternoon walking can be punishing, even with a very early start. Only consider if you’re used to heat and can plan around it.
November–February (cold and changeable)
- Expect short days, frosty mornings up north, and a mix of rain, sleet, or occasional snow in Castilla y León. Some small-town services take breaks. It’s walkable with winter kit and experience, but it’s a very different trip.
A quick read on the route’s weather pattern
- Valencia coast: Mild, with brief heavy showers more likely in autumn.
- Castilla–La Mancha: Big skies, little shade, hotter summers; spring and autumn are far friendlier.
- Castilla y León: Cooler overall; expect crisp mornings and more frequent rain in shoulder seasons.
In short: aim for March–April or mid/late September–October for the most comfortable days and the fewest weather hassles on the Camino de Levante.
Of course, while these recommendations provide a solid starting point, everyone's preferences and circumstances are
unique. For example, if you prefer walking in the cooler morning hours to avoid midday heat, you might prioritize dates with
drier conditions. On the other hand, if you are more accustomed to colder climates, you may choose to avoid hotter
