On the Camino Manchego (Ciudad Real to Toledo), the most reliable start window is March to May. Spring brings mild days, cool mornings, green fields and wildflowers, and mostly firm farm tracks. You’ll get plenty of sunshine with some passing showers—easy to handle with a light shell—and avoid the heavy heat that defines summer on the La Mancha plains.
This route is wide open and exposed, with little shade and towns spaced just far enough apart that water planning matters. Spring gives you comfortable temperatures, long daylight, and steady trail conditions without the extremes.
Expect a classic spring mix: some bright, sunny stretches, some overcast spells with showers, and the odd blustery day. Layers and a light rain shell see you through; sun protection is already useful.
June is usually hot and mostly dry. It’s still doable if you’re heat-aware: start very early, take a long midday break, and top up water whenever you can. Expect long sunny stretches with only brief, light showers.
This is the hardest time to walk La Mancha. Afternoons are often scorching, shade is scarce, and wind offers little relief. Only consider it if you’re well adapted to heat and ready to plan days around dawn starts, long siestas, and carrying extra water. Thunderstorms are uncommon but can pop up; otherwise it’s dry, bright, and relentlessly hot.
A reasonable second choice if spring doesn’t work. September often still feels like summer, with warm to hot afternoons and mostly dry days. October is kinder: warm by day, cooler at night, with a few light rain passages and plenty of clear spells. Days are shorter than spring, but town services are generally steady.
Cool to cold, more cloud, and on-and-off drizzle or light rain. You’ll get bright windows between systems, but you’ll also see chilly mornings and the odd frosty start; rare light snowfall can appear. Trails can be muddy in places and daylight is limited. Feels quiet and calm if you don’t mind variable weather and packing warmer layers.
In short: pick March, April, or May for forgiving temperatures, long days, and the Manchegan landscape at its best.

Of course, while these recommendations provide a solid starting point, everyone's preferences and circumstances are unique. For example, if you prefer walking in the cooler morning hours to avoid midday heat, you might prioritize dates with drier conditions. On the other hand, if you are more accustomed to colder climates, you may choose to avoid hotter periods - even if it means encountering more rain. Our search tool allows you to customize your journey to align with your specific needs and preferences, ensuring the best possible experience on the Camino.
