Best time to walk the Ruta del Padre Sarmiento (Pontevedra to Santiago)

This coastal Camino variant loops around the Rías Baixas through beach towns and vineyards before turning inland to Padrón and Santiago. Expect Atlantic weather: sea breezes, morning mist, and changeable skies, with warmer, stickier air away from the water.

On the Ruta del Padre Sarmiento, the most reliable start window is May to June, or late August to early September. You’ll get long daylight, mostly comfortable temperatures, and fewer long wet spells—lively villages without peak-summer crush.

May–June: best all-round window

Late spring into early summer is the easiest to plan. Coastal paths feel fresh, hillsides are green, and wildflowers line the route. Showers still pass through, but they’re usually short with bright spells in between.

Late August–early September: warm seas, steady days

After the peak holidays, towns calm down and the ocean is at its warmest. Days are settled, evenings comfortable, and vineyards are busy with harvest.

July–early August: beachy but hotter and busier

Great for swims and long, bright days, but heat and humidity build away from the coast, and resort towns are crowded.

March–April: green, quiet, and changeable

You’ll find peaceful trails and lush scenery, mixed with sunshine and frequent showers. Boardwalks and rock slabs can be slick after rain.

Late September–October: mellow light, increasing fronts

Early autumn can be lovely, then Atlantic fronts grow more frequent. Still rewarding, but expect windier capes and the odd soaking day.

November–February: quietest and wettest

Winter is walkable but more committing: frequent rain, occasional storms, and short days, with some services reduced in small coastal towns.

Of course, while these recommendations provide a solid starting point, everyone's preferences and circumstances are unique. For example, if you prefer walking in the cooler morning hours to avoid midday heat, you might prioritize dates with drier conditions. On the other hand, if you are more accustomed to colder climates, you may choose to avoid hotter periods - even if it means encountering more rain. Our search tool allows you to customize your journey to align with your specific needs and preferences, ensuring the best possible experience on the Camino.
