Best time to start the Szlak Orlich Gniazd
The Trail of the Eagles’ Nests runs from Częstochowa to Kraków across open limestone uplands, castle-topped hills, and pockets of forest. It’s a low route but quite exposed, so wind, sun, and passing showers matter more than altitude.
On the Szlak Orlich Gniazd, the most reliable start window is late May to June, or August to early October. You’ll typically get comfortable temperatures, long enough days, lively villages, and clearer views—without the deep winter chill, spring mud, or the hottest, stormiest part of summer.
Late May–June: first choice
- Why it works: Long days, fresh greenery, wildflowers on the Jura meadows, and generally mild temperatures. Showers do pass through, but they’re short-lived more often than not.
- Practical notes: Expect changeable skies—carry a light shell and something warm for breezy ridges. Forest sections can be buggy; check for ticks after grassy stretches.
August–September: warm, steady, and scenic
- Why it works: Warm but usually less stifling than July, with fewer thunderstorms than the peak of summer. Harvest colors in the fields and clear castle-top views make this stretch especially photogenic.
- Practical notes: Early August can still be hot. Aim for early starts and make use of shady pauses in woodland belts and valleys.
Early October: crisp air and autumn color
- Why it works: Cool, stable walking weather and vivid foliage, especially around Ojców National Park near the Kraków end.
- Practical notes: Days are shorter and showers more frequent—pack a warmer layer and expect damp mornings. After mid-October it cools quickly.
What about the rest of the year?
July: doable, but hot and stormy
- Expect hotter afternoons and a higher chance of thunderstorms. Much of the route is exposed, so plan early starts, long lunch breaks, and carry plenty of water. Popular castle sites are busier during school holidays.
March–April: mixed spring conditions
- A true shoulder season: you can catch lovely clear days, but also lingering chill, muddy tracks, and the odd sleety spell on north-facing slopes. Fine if you don’t mind variety—bring waterproofs and warm layers.
November–February: winter walkers only
- Short daylight, frequent freeze–thaw, and a mix of snow, ice, and cold rain. Limestone can be slick, and signage or waymarks may be obscured. Some castle facilities reduce hours. If you go, take traction for icy paths and be ready for very chilly mornings.
A quick climate sense-check
- Low hills, big skies: wind and sun exposure matter more than altitude. Layer up and protect from sun even on cool days.
- Showers can build fast in summer: a light waterproof and a drybag for essentials make life easier.
- Surfaces vary: limestone and loose gravel get slippery when wet; sturdy footwear pays off.
Of course, while these recommendations provide a solid starting point, everyone's preferences and circumstances are
unique. For example, if you prefer walking in the cooler morning hours to avoid midday heat, you might prioritize dates with
drier conditions. On the other hand, if you are more accustomed to colder climates, you may choose to avoid hotter
periods - even if it means encountering more rain. Our search tool allows you to customize your journey to align with your specific needs and preferences, ensuring the
best possible experience on the trail.
