Best time of year to walk the Jakobsweg Via Regia

Walking the Jakobsweg Via Regia (Ökumenischer Pilgerweg) from Görlitz to Vacha is about catching steady, walkable weather without winter slush or midsummer heat. Plan to set out on the Jakobsweg Via Regia in late April to early May, or August to September for the best overall experience. That’s when you’ll usually find plenty of dry hours, comfortable temperatures, and only brief, passing showers.

This corridor sits in changeable Central European weather: sun, cloud, and showers trade places through the day. In the windows below you can expect fresh mornings, pleasant afternoons, and routes through fields and towns that feel inviting rather than sticky or bleak.

Late April–Early May (best spring window)

Spring has woken up, but it hasn’t turned hot. Most days bring a mix of sun, cloud, and passing showers, with cool mornings and mild, comfortable afternoons. You get lots of walkable time between showers, blossom in villages, and crisp air that’s ideal for steady pacing. A brief cold snap or a stray flurry can still pop up, especially in exposed stretches, so keep a warm layer handy—but the overall feel is more springlike than wintry.

August–September (best late‑summer/early‑autumn window)

This is the calm, dependable side of summer. August is warm with bright spells and the odd short thunderstorm that clears the air; nights are generally comfortable. By September, heat tends to ease back to mild days and cooler mornings, with fewer intense stormy afternoons. You’ll still see passing showers, but many days stay mostly dry—great for linking towns without rushing.

June–July (walkable, but watch heat and storms)

Early starts help in these months. Expect warm to hot afternoons and a higher chance of short, lively thunderstorms after sunny spells. There are still plenty of dry hours, but humidity and heat can make exposed farm tracks feel longer.

March and Early April (shoulder season, still unsettled)

You’ll find longer dry breaks mixed with frequent light showers and grey spells. It’s mostly cool, with the possibility of a late wet snow burst that melts quickly. Fine for hardy walkers who don’t mind changeable weather and cooler mornings; less appealing if you’re after spring greenery and steadier skies.

October (cooler, cloudier, still doable)

The pattern turns more overcast with recurring drizzle or brief showers between sunny breaks. Days feel cool once the sun fades, and mornings can be cold. If you’re happy with damp air and a more muted landscape, it remains a pleasant, quieter time; just expect more layers-on, layers-off walking.

November–February (not recommended for most)

These months are cold and mostly grey, with frequent light snow, sleet, or cold drizzle and short daylight. Surfaces can be wet or slushy after brief thaws, and clear spells are short. It’s doable with winter experience, but most walkers will enjoy the Via Regia much more in spring or late summer/early autumn.

Of course, while these recommendations provide a solid starting point, everyone's preferences and circumstances are unique. For example, if you prefer walking in the cooler morning hours to avoid midday heat, you might prioritize dates with drier conditions. On the other hand, if you are more accustomed to colder climates, you may choose to avoid hotter periods - even if it means encountering more rain. Our search tool allows you to customize your journey to align with your specific needs and preferences, ensuring the best possible experience on the Camino.
