About weather on the Pennine Way

The Pennine Way from Edale to Kirk Yetholm spans exposed high moors and valleys, with weather that shifts quickly across seasons and elevations. Late spring through early autumn brings the most forgiving combination of daylight and ground conditions; June and September often provide milder temperatures and steadier underfoot. Early season can be mixed and cool with wet ground, autumn trends windier and wetter with shorter days, and winter delivers regular storms, hill fog, snow or ice.

  • Spring: Changeable with frequent rain and occasional snow on tops; temperatures from -4°C to 21°C; wetter ground and cool nights.
  • Summer: Long daylight, milder high moors, firmer underfoot; regular showers and occasional heavy rain; temperatures broadly 11°C to 28°C.
  • Autumn: Variable skies with heavy showers and wind; trail re‑wets and rivers rise; daylight shortens, making longer stages feel compressed.
  • Winter: Frequent storms, hill fog, snow and ice on higher sections; very short days; temperatures down to -10°C with patchy village services.
